SFS-Qatar students Mohammed Sudairi ('11), Reine Atrach ('11), and Dianna Manalastas ('12) planned and taught the lesson.
After watching a video on Chinese families in rural and urban areas, the students went to the Qatar Foundation recreation center. SFS-Qatar students Bady Abu Abou-Jaoude ('12) and Jibin Koshy ('12) organized several games of badminton for the visiting students.
After learning about the history and culture of China, and playing one of the most popular sports, the students were asked to take part in a traditional form of art - Chinese woodblock printing. Students simulated woodblock prints by 'carving' designs into styrofoam pieces before painting and printing them on paper. Several unique creations were made, including a rainbow 'Dolce & Gabbana' sign. Perhaps not quite what ancient Chinese artists had in mind, but certainly a creative blend of both old and new.
The day was concluded with a journal response time in which students were asked to answer the question, "What was the most surprising thing you learned about China today?" Answers ranged from the food, to the population, the one child policy, to the growth in trade and commerce, and the vast differences in climate and topography found in the country. Participation certificates were awarded to each student and group pictures were taken. A rather eventful and educational day was had by all!
